shutting down my pc

I have a problem shutting down my computer after using the internet. If I
just work offline, shutdown works OK, but after I have used the internet I
exit my homepage and then I disconnect from the WEB. When I then go to shut
down my computer I click on the start button, select turn off computer and
the egg timer comes up and the pc locks up, i.e. I am unable to do anything.
The only way to turn the pc off is by physically switching it off at the
mains. My security system is Norton 360 and my homepage is www.orange.co.uk,
supplied by orange(wanadoo).

Just a thought, since you can replicate this at will, Open Task Manager
and review the processes that are running before the shutdown in the
working situation, and then again after the "web edit" situation. The
"extra" process is the culprit.

Bob thank you for writing in. I started up task manager and checked on
processes running etc. With internet still connected the processes still
running were the following:-
ccapp.exe
ccSvchst.exe
svchost.exe
SYSTEM IDLE

when I disconnected from the internet ccApp.exe and ccSvchst.exe were still
running.

Ccapp.exe and ccSvchst.exe are associated with a Symantec product so it's
due to Norton 360. Personally I think you are better off without any of the
Norton / Symantec home security products. There are good alternatives that
are less resource heavy and less problematic, and some are free.

As Rock said, the "cc" ones are the Norton stuff, I would suspect the
Web access has "set" them to doing something and that is interfering
with the shutdown. Try killing then and then attempt the shutdown to verify.
