My problem is that when I click on My Computer and My Network Places the
search companion starts. This happens instead of the usual browse drives and
or network attachments. Any ideas as to what might be causing this problem
would be appreciated, or how to set it right.

"Search companion starts when double-clicking on a folder"

Thanks for the sources. The issue that Doug Knox refers to is "Fixes problem
where Search opens on a double click". I found this in the MS KnowledgeBase
and checked the registry to see if this was the problem, but it appears not
to be the case. Still no solution!

Did you check both the Directory and Drive?

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell

See if this helps: Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 /i shell32

Thankyou Kelly that worked just fine. Incidentally I had check both
Directory and Drive shell settings, and both were fine.

Kelly I have found another problem that you might have a solution for. On
the Start Menu the Printers and Faxes icon when clicked returns "this file
does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Folder Options control panel." It doesn't open
the Printers folder. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Great, glad to hear it and most interesting how the edit didn't correct it
but the command did. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Max,

I have seen this caused from several reasons, most being from added third
party scripts.

Does this folder exist in Windows Explorer: Control Panel/Printers and
Faxes? If so, is Printers listed here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\Printers
/top10faqs.htm

Hello Kelly,
The folder exists in Windows Explorer and in the registry location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\Printers.

The only installation that comes to mind that I have installed in the last
two weeks is MS Intellipoint version 5. Beyond that I doubt that any 'third
party scripts' have been run with my consent.

Hi Max,

What I find odd is that this is the only option/setting you mentioned that
gives you this error message. If it were to be more than this, this edit
would be the answer. Give it a shot as it won't cause any harm.

EXE Fix for Windows XP - Line 12 (Restores EXE association)

To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

I applied the registry script but to no effect.

I would be grateful for any other suggestions.

Kelly, actually, something that I have just noticed. I cannot explore from
the right mouse click, for example, if I right click on a folder in Explorer
and select Explore, I get an error message. This whole business is very
curious. I noticed this after applying the registry EXE script.

Hi Max,

What is the error message and that edit would not have caused this behavior.
You seem to have other issues going on here. The Explore and Open are also
ITBarLayout Settings, in part.

Try the run command again to correct the obvious:

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 /i shell32

If that doesn't correct the issue (and it should) use this automated edit:

Search or CMD Opens When Double Clicking a Folder or Drive (Line 18)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the VBS File: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you
may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double-click the vbs file.
You will be prompted when the script is done.

Hi Kelly,

thankyou for your help with this matter, unfortunately neither
recommendation work to resolve the issue. I fixed the problem by restoring a
backup copy of my registry from last month. I still don't know what went
wrong, and must admit I find that both curious annoying.

Thankyou again for you help.

regards Max
