Search companion help, help, help!!!

My search companion is grayed out. I have re-installed, restored and
everything else in this forum but still not working. Comparing my computer
search companion files, registry etc to my son's computer (his search
companion is fine and working) our computer files etc are identical so there
should be no reason my wouldn't work too, right?

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to get my search companion
to display? It's driving me crazy.

Thanks in advance.

This might work if you haven't already tried it.
Log on to the computer using an account with administrator permissions.
Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This reinstalls
the files that Search Companion uses.

I've tried that several times. It shows it's installing.....acts like it did
but then still no search companion. I've re-installed with the windows xp cd
also. Again, looks like it's re-installing but search is still grayed out.
Any other ideas?

Hi Cheryl,

What you are needing to compare are the policy keys, as in:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

Post them here if you don't get this resolved and good luck!

Hi Cheryl,

You didn't mention which keys you verified in your first post. Check here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState

If they are different, export his and merge it onto yours.

The difference between our computers under the below registry keys:
Mine has:

Fullpath REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
Fullpathaddress REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
Settings REG_BINARY 0c 00 02 00 1a 01 e7 77 60 00 00 00

My son's is the same except his doesn't have the Fullpathaddress entry.

Would deleting that line in my registry be helpful or harmful?

Please advise. Thank you so much.

Are both systems running the same service packs (SP1, SP2)? Either way,
export the key to your desktop, make the modification in the registry. If
it helps, all is well...if not restore the export. Good luck!

Cheryl,

You must be leaving something out, here. Had to modified Search to use
Classic via an edit or TweakUI or something similar? If not, when did this
behavior start? Does Search do this from the Start Menu and Windows
Explorer? Are you getting an error message with a yellow triangle?

In the meantime: Export this key and email it to me:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

And run the edit on line 229

Not sure when it started.......I tried to search for a file around 8/15 and
it was gone. The weird thing is, I was out of town from 7/21-8/14 and my
msgr3en.dll and srchui.dll showed they were modified on 8/4. No one had
access to the computer and it was shut down during the whole time I was gone.
On 8/14 when I got home and turned it on, there was a Windows update to
download: service 2.0, which I did and we also installed a new monitor that
day also. I think it was the next day 8/15 when I tried to use the search
and it was all grayed out. It doesn't work from the start menu or on the
Internet search either. There are no error messages. I tried re-installing
via %systemroot%/inf....didn't work. Tried re-installing off the XP cd,
didn't work. Acts like it's re-installing ~ goes through the install process
but the search companion doesn't display.
I ran the edit line on 229 as suggested. Nothing.
How do I email you?
Thanks a bunch.

I did not see an answer to this thread and I may have found it in the
following KB article from MS. Check out the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831430
"Several dialog boxes are blank"

The title of the article is not very helpful, however the fix did work.
I re-registered both referenced dll's vbscript.dll and jscript.dll and
my search companion started working. I was also experiencing problems
with IE 6.0 - the version string did not display in Help->About
Internet Explorer and the corresponding dialog box "ok" button did not
work, they now work.

you probably have other issues too right? maybe system restore , help
and support, user accounts or security centre might also be blank, do
you have problems with windows installer?
If you do you have a seriously corrupted registry permissions problem.
It was probably from a virus that was deleted long ago but the issues
just keep stacking up.

i have these problems and everyone else seems to have done a 'clean
install'.
Several dialog boxes are blank
from the site:
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=831430
I used regedit to find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{f414c260-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb58}\In
procServer32
and noticed i hve no CLASSES string. In filetypes in folder options i
have nothing there either. the permissions security box were set to
SYSTEM only and had no permissions set.
i dont know if this string is supposed to act this way but
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/security/policy/secrets/SAC and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/security/policy/secrets/SAI
show : "cannot open "SAI or SAC", error while opening key"

Ive looked in many newsgroups and forums and wrote to a few MVPS and
this issue runs back to the summer of last year [2005] but no one has
any real lead on what caused it or how to correct it. happy hunting

Thank you kelly for your help, ive emailed you an extensive list of
issues which I dont need to post here.

Ive ran into a few forums and saw others who shared this problem and
were forced to do a clean install, so I hope this saves someone some
time.
problems;
Search, user accounts, help and support, filmstrip view pane, filetypes
(in folder options) were all blank and could not be reinstalled or
registered. Defaults would not stick in 'set program access and
defaults', Internet Explorer was corrupted , some programs wouldnt work
and win installer wasnt functioning properly (this one still is acting
up).

with that said I fixed all of the above by resetting the registry
permissions of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/classes
in regedit make sure in the classes key, permissions are set to 'full'
for;
administrators
system
and at LEAST 'read' for NON administrator accounts or set to full for;
users
user [your account name]
[OWNER/CREATOR was in there with no permissions and no way to set them
so I had to delete it ]

exit regedit and with the run dialog I ran these one at a time
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
(and for filmstrip view I registered 'win fax and pic viewer' just to
be safe)
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll
All Blank windows were functioning again as well as programs that
stopped working. This did not fix win installer, but at least it
allowed me to install programs.
I still dont know why this happened but be careful of a program called
'IEXPLORER.EXE' [not to be confused with 'iexplore.exe']. 'IEXPLORER'
was a dialer trojan which may have been the culprit.
Good Luck
Why doesn't Search work?
