No hard drive found sometimes

Sometimes my computer will quit working and tell me that I do not have a hard
drive. At first I thought it was a virus but my virus protection thing says
I don't have a virus. My computer works sometimes, a little bit slower that
usual and sometimes it will just freeze then shut down and tell me I don't
have a hard drive. Does anyone know what this is or what it means?? I want
to get it fixed and I don't even know where to start!

Thank you

The hard drive could be about to fail, backup your data and take the machine
to a computer repair shop.

Hi,

It could be something as simple as the drive cabling coming loose. Shutting
down and reseating the connections (both ends) may help resolve this. Make
sure to unplug the tower and discharge static electricity from yourself
before messing around inside the system.

It is also possible that the drive is failing, in which case nothing is
going to fix it beyond replacing it. Download and run a drive diagnostic
from the manufacturer, it will tell you the state of the drive and whether
it should be replaced. These tools are typically free and run from a
bootable floppy or CD. Use caution with the tests, as some of the more
advanced ones can erase the drive.
