My Computer Opens Very Slowly

For some reason, when I double click on My Computer (or go through the
Start Menu to Administrative Tools,) a long time passes before the
folder list opens. Sometimes it doesn't open at all. Am a headed for a
reinstall? I've searched for hours on the Internet trying to find a
solution.

Hello mcp6453,

Check your Task manager what service/exe causes a lot of CPU or RAM use.
Maybe your Antivirus or something else is running very high.

Best regards

Do you have a drive mapping to a network drive?

if you type
net use * /delete
press enter
from a cmd prompt does that speed things? If so you may have had a
disconnected mapped drive

Great stuff, glad to have helped, thanks for the feedback.

Ooops. Spoke too soon. After I typed the command the problem went away.
I reconnected the network drives (everything has been working fine with
the network drivers for six month.) Plus, I just rebooted the computer
with the shared drives. Even though I disconnected the network drives,
ran the net use command above, and rebooted, My Computer still has the
flashlight.

Any thoughts on why the network drive thing has stopped working and on
what the new problem could be? I'm wondering if it's time for a re-install.

Perhaps you have a mapping being created to a share that no longer exists?

Strange things are happening. I imaged the hard drive and installed it
in an identical computer. It works fine, indicating the my present
computer has a problem. However, when I restarted my present computer,
it started fine. Therefore, it seems to me that the present computer
could have a failing NIC. It is going to be interesting to see.
Sometimes the mapped network drives have a red X in them at boot time,
but they go away after I connect to the drive. At one point, the red X's
reappeared, indicating that something in the networking configuration is
hosed or getting hosed.

Could be a failing NIC, also look here in case this helps
