I have Adobe Acrobat 6.0 installed on my computer and the pdf conversion
icons show up on Excel and Powerpoint but not on Word. I cannot convert
Word documents to pdf.

The Acrobat add-in should be in the correct Office startup folder which for
Word 2003 is
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\STARTUP (which it may not be as
Word 2003 post dates Acrobat 6).
You need the latest update from Acrobat for it to work with Word 2003.
If both apply, check that pdfmaker.dot appears in tools > templates and
add-ins and is checked. (You may find pdfmakerA.dot there also. You can
ignore that one.)
Check that view > toolbars has PDFMaker 6.0 checked.
See http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm for some
background.

A few things to check:
1. In Word, click on Tools | Options | File Locations, to see
where your startup folder is. Make sure the PDFMAKER.DOT and
PDFMAKERA.DOT files are in your Word startup folder.
2. In Word, click on Tools | Macro | Security | Security
Level. If your macro security level is set to High, then either
change the security level to Medium, or add Adobe to the list of
trusted sources. See
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP052356731033.aspx
"Modify the list of trusted publishers for macros" for more
information on how to do the latter.
3. In Word, click on Tools | Templates and Add-ins... under
"Global templates and add-ins", is PDFMaker.dot listed as a
choice, and is it checked?
4. In Word, click on View | Toolbars... is PDFMaker listed as
a choice, and is it checked?
