MVP: Why do linked objects not show up in my PDF?

I have created a document in Word2007, then Saved As a pdf. Within the
original Word2007 document are linked objects (illustrations) (using Insert >
Text > Object OR Insert > Illustrations: Shapes to create a box > Hyperlink
to the object ). The objects (illustrations) are in a folder on the same
computer. But when I open the .pdf document with Acrobat Reader 8, it
displays only the icons where those linked objects are supposed to appear,
not the illustrations themselves. And when I print the pdf from Reader,
again I get only the icons, but not the illustrations. What's wrong? Did the
object-links not transfer over from the Word format to the PDF format? How
can I check to see if the links are there in the PDF? Or do I need a better
version of Adobe software to make these links work, rather than just Acrobat
Reader? Or do I have to put the linked object folder in a different location
so Acrobat Reader can find it? What am I doing wrong?

UPDate: I have found that when I click on the links in the original Word2007
document, a window appears showing me the linked illustration, but not so
with the version Saved As a .pdf document. Have the links been stripped off
during conversion to PDF? Do I need to use Adobe Acrobat instead of Adobe
Reader for them to appear? How do I fix this?
