What is mup.sys? Why does my computer hang during boot when it
tries to load this file?

What drivers have you installed or updated recently?

Right-click, Properties, Version on the mup.sys file shows a description
of "Multiple UNC Provider driver". Ran Windows Update recently? Are
you on a corporate domain where they may push updates to your host
(whether you want them or not)?

Have you tried booting into Safe mode and, if successful, then rebooting
into normal mode? What happens if you yank the RJ-45 plug out of your
NIC and then bootup normally?

A search on "mup.sys" for Windows 2000 at http://support.microsoft.com/
found 12 related KB articles. Of the ones that I took a quick glance
at, they mentioned DFS (distributed file system). I didn't bother
reading them in detail. You can do that.
