Multiple Win 98 OS with XP

Dave C

I am able to install and dual boot with Win 98 and Win XP,
but would like to have another Win 98 OS on a seperate
drive to boot and use for testing and incompatible
programs. Is this possible? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks

Dave,

It is certainly possible to have a Windows 98 partition and 2 separate
Windows XP partitions.
Please be aware that for the second Windows XP partition you will need to
purchase another copy/license of Windows XP.
You may only install one copy on you PC as per the End User License
Agreement (see the link on Start ... Run .. winver) a second copy requires
an additional license

No, you can only install Windows 98 once on single hard drive.
In other words, you cannot have multiple installations of Windows
98 on one drive.

| Thanks for the advice on the XP and licenses, I
| understand. But I would like to have have two Win 98 OS
| partitions with one XP OS partition, using seperate hard
| drives. I understand licensing will still be an issue.
| Is it possible?

Yes, it is possible to do what you want to do. You'll have to be able to
manually edit the boot.ini file. If you want to get into it, let me know. As
far as the license crap, I wish Microbug would make up there minds. As I've
understood the license agreement, it was one license per processor/machine
and that license tag had to be on the case. It is simple impossible to use 2
installations of an OS at the same time on the same machine. duh!!

Richie,

The EULA (for Windows XP - I do not have access to the Windows 98 one at the
moment) does mention the "installation" on a PC. It is not a concurrent
license where you can have many installs but only use one at a time, it is
on a per install basis.
It is also not impossible to use multiple instances of the OS on the same PC
at the same time by using products such as Microsoft VirtualPC or VMWare
Workstation. So the EULA accounts for this also.

1. GRANT OF LICENSE. Microsoft grants you the following
rights provided that you comply with all terms and
conditions of this EULA:
1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access,
display and run one copy of the Software on a single computer,
such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation
Computer"). The Software may not be used by more than two (2)
processors at any one time on any single Workstation Computer.
1.2 Mandatory Activation.
