I'm setting up a computer for my daughter's family. She wants to have four
separate users. Since I am the on;y user of my computer, I'm not familiar
with the ins & outs of doing this. Setting up the accounts is no problem,
but I'm not sure about installing programs that the various users can use.
What is the best way for me to:

1. Ensure that no one can add or delete programs without her knowledge?

2. Allow everyone to be able to access the internet using the same browser &
email program? (Mozilla & Eudora)

3. Play their games from their individual accounts?

4. Print from their individual acounts?

5. Anything else you can think of? :-)

Many thanks.[/QUOTE]

1. Your daughter's account should be a Computer Administrator, while the
other accounts should be Limited Users. Limited accounts can't install
software. All accounts should be password protected, especially your
daughter's account.

2. Everyone will be able to access the internet and use email.

3. Many games won't work well or at all under a Limited User account. It's
the trade-off you make when you use a Limited account.

4. Everyone will be able to print.

Ted,

Thanks for the info!. I have two follow-ups if you don't mind.

1. Can everyone use a program from their account that was installed under
the admin. account, or does each program need to be installed under each
account? I am thinking of Mozilla & Eudora specifically but Word and others
may also be used.

2. Anything I can do about the game situation so the kids can play their
games without having to have my daughter log on for them?

I am not a computer novice, alhtough it does sound like it! Been doing
this for over 15 years, but this multiple accounts stuff is totally new to
me! Thanks for the help

Looks like Wesley gave you some good information. I don't install a great
deal of software, but here's a few ideas for you:

Software written for Windows XP typically asks you, early in the
installation process, whether you want the software installed for yourself
only or for all users.

Before I install any software, I always read about it on the program's
technical support web site. You can get a lot of important information about
installing and using software.

As for your second question: No, you can't make a game work on a limited
account if the game needs administrator privileges on the machine.

What he said. ;-)
