Multiple user accounts

When I delete or change items on the Start:progarams menu in my son's user
account (limited account), it deletes or changes it on my account
(administrator). This also happened when I deleted some desktop icons on my
son's desktop. The same icons were deleted on my desktop in my user account.
When I added these icons back to my desktop, they remained off of my son's
desktop (which is what I was trying to do in the first place).

How can I make changes to start menu items or desk tops without affecting
other user accounts on the same computer?

Your computer has under: C:\Documentents and Settings\Your acounts.
You have one called: "All Users" and then yours and your son's accounts.
Each of the "Desktop" folders under each account name hold your icons. (for
program icons look under the "start menu" folder). Basically if an icon or
program is in the "all users" it shows on everyones computer. and thus if
just under yours it is just your profile. You can remove and cpy and paste
around in these folders to get what you are looking for.

What you see on your Desktop, as well as the Start Menu, is the
result of combining the contents of two folders.

When a user logs on, the Desktop icons displayed come from
these two locations:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

The Start menu is a product of these two folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Start Menu
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

What that means is that any account that logs on to the
computer will see the desktop icons and Start menu items that
are stored in the All Users profile as well as their own
profile. The contents of the two folders are combined to create
the users desktop or start menu.

Try this, right click on the Start button and select "Explore
All Users". Right click on the Start button again except this
time move your pointer up to Explore. Once you've opened up
both folders, right click on the Taskbar at the bottom of your
screen and select "Tile Windows Vertically" from the drop down
menu. With the two folders displayed side-by-side, compare the
contents as well as the folder name.

It sounds as if when you were deleting desktop icons and start
menu items, you deleted them from the All Users folders. When
you added the icons back, you put them in the Desktop folder
for your user account, C:\Documents and
Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Desktop.

Hopefully, that helps explain things for you.
