multiple task bars

I have 2 task bars right next the start button....
When I open Windows Explorer, for example, I get 2
identical icons of Explorer on the task bar.

How can I get rid of one so I have only one task bar at
the bottom?

You mean your task bar is double high? It's still a single task
bar.

The task bar is a window which can be resized like other windows.
Put your cursor on the top edge and make it turn into a
double-headed arrow. Then drag it down to make it smaller (make
sure it's unlocked forst).
