Multiple "small" problems: maybe one big one?

J

Jeffrey Kaplan

I think, but I'm not positive, that a few minor problems I've been
having are related and may indicate a larger problem:

* My Logitech Setpoint settings often get corrupted
* iTunes never cleans up its iT.tmp file
* Automatic Wallpaper Changer occasionally complains that it cannot
find one of its settings files when loading (the one that contains
its files list)
* I will periodically get a "what do you want to do with this type of
media" prompt when inserting a CD despite having previously told the
system to "do nothing" AND to always take the same action for that
type of media

In the case of iTunes, I've tried a clean reinstall, no change. I
tried running it in a new user profile on my computer and +that+
worked. In the case of Setpoint, I tried a clean reinstall, no change.

The only commonality I can find between these various programs and
issues is they all use the Registry to store at least some of their
settings.

I have done a full virus, trojan and rootkit scan with Kaspersky
Internet Security v7 with its current detection engine and database
files. No problems were found (the full scan took about 7 hours).

What next?

Running only one security package to check / clear out spyware wold
not always work. I have yet to find one that will always detect every
spywares. You should be running a few of these anti-spyware tools so
as to "average" out the removals.

Ad Aware
Spybot: Search and Destroy
Spyware Terminator
Super AntiSpywares

HiJackThis (and post the log onto one of the web forums that help with
this removal tool.)

Thank you for the response.

IMO, useless. I've used it in the past (paid version), and it never
caught anything, not even "marginal" stuff that my A/Vs or SpyBot S&D
have found.
Spybot: Search and Destroy

Have it, did not scan specifically for this issue, but I did run it
within the past week and other than some potential "tracking cookies"
it came up clean. This set issue has been going on for some time.
Spyware Terminator

Never heard of it.
Super AntiSpywares

It conflicts with other security/utility software I have (KIS, Spybot).

I do have a support ticket in with each Apple and Logitech. Actually,
this is my second attempt to get help from Logi on this.

Thing is, I don't think the problem is with any of those three
specifically, I think the problem is external to them and causing the
issue with those items.

That found a problem with Autoplay V2. However, "either the device is
malfunctioning, or the wizard cannot determine the problem." From its
log:

| Test [Drive Notification] - Instance [D:\, Drive Type: 5]:
| Result [Legacy Notification]: OK
| Result [AutoPlay V2 Notification]: Problems {
| Service (Silent)
| Shell (Deaf) }
| >> Repair << [Autoplay V2 Event]
| Step: No steps to take.
| Result: This AutoPlay setting cannot be fixed. Either the device is malfunctioning, or the wizard cannot determine the problem.
|
| >> Required action: The wizard found problems but cannot fix them -> None
P.S. If you like Kaspersky 7 you will adore Kaspersky 2009, and you can
upgrade for free during the period of your license.

I have plenty of time, then. I'll look into what's new, improved, etc.
Free full upgrade, can't beat that! Thanks.

Automatic Wallpaper Changer "seemed" to be a "Powertoy" provided by
the programming "team" of Windows XP. As with all Powertoys, these
are not supported.

Spyware Terminator by Crawler has had a good successful for me. It is
"free" for everyone, including businesses (???)

Super AntiSpyware can be installed in an "not sheilding" mode and used
to scan for any possible "spyware" infestation that several other
tools do not find.

Sorry, but I seem to recall that Powertoys had this. I have been
corrected!

It might have been, I don't know. But the one I'm using isn't an MS
Powertoy.
