Missing system tray icons

Does anyone know why WinXP Pro sp2 periodically loses icons in the
system tray? And more importantly, how to stop this?

It doesn't happen to all icons, just some of them. The applications
are not necessarily closed, they're just missing from the tray. If I
call on a function provided by an app that should be in the tray area
but is not there, it still works. And they do show in Task Manager.

Yes, I've checked both the collapsed and expanded views of the tray.

Icons that periodically go missing like this include Wallmaster
(wallpaper manager), CLCL (clipboard extender), Task Manager, and
Process Explorer. I have also at times lost the icons for Hotsync
Manager, Volume Control, and Safely Remove Hardware.

Known bug when you automatically log into Windows.

Fix:

Do not use automatic log in and wait a few seconds at the welcome screen
before logging in. Or simply log off the user account then log back in the
user account.

To disable Automatic Login,

Type the following in the Run dialog box:

control userpasswords2

Place a checkmark for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer." If this option is already enabled then you need to **create** a
password for the user account.

Hi Jeff,
When the Icons on your Tray not used for a period of time it goed to Unused
Icons Folder.
To show them again Right click on ther Start Button and select Properties
and on Taskbar Tab locate the Customize Button [ Customize..] click on it
and there you can make them Always show on the Notification Area again.
Hope this which you are after if I understood you correctly.

Known bug when you automatically log into Windows.

Except that I'm not automatically logging into Windows. Due to work
security requirements, I log in manually. My userid is shown in the
login screen, but I have to manually type in my password.

I usually do wait a few seconds before logging in anyway. One, to let
the system settle a bit first, and two, to ensure that my BT keyboard
has an established connection before trying to type on it.

That looks more likely, but uPnP is currently not running, though SSPD
was running. I'll check it out more deeply.

will not include a self-destruct mechanism unless absolutely necessary.
If it is necessary, it will not be a large red button labelled "Danger:
Do Not Push". The big red button marked "Do Not Push" will instead
trigger a spray of bullets on anyone stupid enough to disregard it.
Similarly, the ON/OFF switch will not clearly be labelled as such.
