System Tray Icons

I've got 3 related issues. When I try to customize the system tray
icons, I find that 1) there are some there that are from deleted
programs and 2) there is one missing, my network cable. I hid it
permanently a week ago. Now I can't unhide it. Its not there. Last
3) some are there 3 and 4 times.

How do I clean this up? I can't imagine where to start. And any
search on google gives me the typical procedure to "hide" them thus
removing them from the system tray.

Here's how:

1. Open Notepad.
2. Copy between the lines:

---------------copy inside only------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify]
"IconStreams"=-
"PastIconsStream"=-
---------------copy inside only------------------

3. Paste into Notepad and Save-as ClearSystemTray.reg (or any name + .reg)
4. Double-click or right-click and merge into the registry.
5. Open the 'Task Manager' (press Ctrl+Shift+Esc or Ctrl+Alt+Del)
6. Right-click on "explorer.exe" and click on 'End Process' and choose Yes.
7. To restart Explorer, select 'File/New Task (Run...)' and type "explorer.exe"
8. Now it's all clear.

Thanks. I finally got around to doing this and have cleared the keys
and reset things. Just for others, if they read this, this process
seems to literally reset you back to day one. No extra icons in the
'customize' list, no hidden icons as everything is new, etc. You have
to wait a while again for the system to age the icons and start hiding
them. Nothing wrong with this, but its just a fact. The timeout
might have been less than a fresh reload, I think they started hiding
after about 3 hours. I was skeptical and it took me a few weeks to get
around to it. I've had router issues and that has more important.

Again thanks ju.c.
