My son is having a problem with repetitive pop-ups. He has XP. He tells me
when he opens IE, the pop-ups come fast and furious and then the browser
shuts down before he can close them. I am going to go and install a pop-up
stopper and a antivirus program for him, but how do I stop the pop-ups so I
can use the browser to d/l the programs?

Thanks!

Paula

Better add

adaware

or

spybot search & destroy

to the list of needed programs. They remove malicious ad-ware programs.
Both are free for personal use, in their standard versions. Both use a
recognition file, which can be updated across the internet, after you
install them, but before you have them scan your PC.

You can download either one at www.download.com

Thanks, but according to him (I haven't been to his house/computer yet) he
can't get to the Internet because the pop-ups shut down the browser as soon
as he opens it. I don't know how I'm going to check things/download if I
can't use the browser?

Download onto another computer. Burn the programs to a CD. Install on your
son's computer!

Do the Popups only occur when IE starts or when an internet connection is
achieved? If it is the former, try installing another browser. Opera and
Mozilla are good and are included on the cover CD's that come with some
Computer Magazines.

Just as a matter of course, I believe that it is a good idea to have at
least two browsers (I.E. and Mozilla 1.6 for me) installed, as it is usually
still possible to access the internet and search for fixes if the other
starts showing problems.

System Specs:
OS: Windows XP Pro SP1
RAM: 1GB DDR400
CPU: AMD 2500+
Chipset: VIA (4-in-1 Driver: 4.51)
Main Board: Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394 (BIOS F4)
Graphics: Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800Pro (Catalyst 4.10)

My reommendation is go to google look for google toolbar
or go to MSN and get there toolbar, either one when
installed will go into your IE browser and believe me
you'll have no more pop ups

There are at least three varieties of pop-ups, and the solutions
vary accordingly. Which specific type(s) is troubling you?

1) Does the title bar of these pop-ups read "Messenger Service?"

This type of spam has become quite common over the past year or
so, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you most definitely open to other threats, such as the Blaster Worm
that still haunts the Internet. Install and use a decent, properly
configured firewall. (Merely disabling the messenger service, as some
people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does little or nothing
to truly secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with"
the security gap represented by these messages is particularly
foolish.

Blocking Ads, Parasites, and Hijackers with a Hosts File

Whichever firewall you decide upon, be sure to ensure UDP ports
135, 137, and 138 and TCP ports 135, 139, and 445 are _all_ blocked.
You may also disable Inbound NetBIOS (NetBIOS over TCP/IP). You'll
have to follow the instructions from firewall's manufacturer for the
specific steps.

You can test your firewall at:

Oh, and be especially wary of people who advise you to do nothing
more than disable the messenger service. Disabling the messenger
service, by itself, is a "head in the sand" approach to computer
security. The real problem is _not_ the messenger service pop-ups;
they're actually providing a useful, if annoying, service by acting as
a security alert. The true problem is the unsecured computer, and
you've been advised to merely turn off the warnings. How is this
helpful?

2) For regular Internet pop-ups, you might try the free 12Ghosts
Popup-killer from http://12ghosts.com/ghosts/popup.htm, Pop-Up Stopper
from http://www.panicware.com/, or the Google Toolbar from
http://toolbar.google.com/, which is what I use.

3) To deal with pop-ups caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Xupiter, Bonzai Buddy, or
KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately (but without
understanding the consequences) installed, two products that are
quite effective (at finding and removing this type of scumware) are
Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions. It's even
possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your system
against most future intrusions. I use both and generally perform
manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

from another computer, download adaware from download.com,
then download the updated reference file from the publishers of adaware,
at
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

copy to a CD-R and take it with you.

find a CD with Netscape and see if the problem persists.
If not then use it to download Spybot S&D to scan your
HDD. if it still persists then you will have to but Anti-
spyware software.

Microsoft has its own anoying advertising option build
in. It is called Messenging service. It was build to
notify you when you updates come out but now only
spammers take advantage of this service. When you would
go onto the internet millions of small Messenger Service
will open and keep poping up ever few minutes. If this is
the problem go Start, click Control Panel, click
Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools,
and then double-click Services. There find Messenger.
Right click on it and go to propreties. There select
dissabled in Start up list. Then click on. Ten in the
Services window right click it again and this time select
stop.

If that was the problem then your welcome otherwise it
sounds that you some sort of a trojan horse or spyware.
