Multiple Outlook 2007 icons in Start menu

I have pinned the Outlook icon to my Start Menu to ease opening. Now each
time that I open Outlook 2007 from my desktop, I get a second icon appearing
on the Start menu.
I know that an easy way to deal with this would be to remove the icon from
my desktop to allow opening from only the Start menu but, my wife prefers to
open the programme by double clicking on the desktop so that's not really an
option.

Is this a known problem and is there a fix for it, because it's starting to
irritate me.
