Multiple instances problem

I wonder if anyone here can help me fix a problem that's been annoying
me for a year or two please, even though it's not strictly a pure XP
issue?

I like to open JPG files with IrfanView so I have that set as my JPG
association in XP File Types. Then I use a facility in IrfanView to
open the file in any of 3 external editors, the first of which I've
specified as PaintShop Pro 8. But that always opens it with a new
instance of PSP 8, instead of just opening the file.

I have other programs (e.g. one of my music players, MediaMonkey) that
have a setting which limits them to a single instance, but sadly PSP 8
doesn't have that feature.

One thing I did try was writing my own macro to open the file from
IrfanView by identifying the full path and filename and pasting it
into XP Pro's Run box, like this:
"C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8\Paint Shop
Pro.exe" "C:\Docs\My Videos\MAGIX Exports\TestCalgary-Text01a.JPG"

.... but that opened a new instance of PSP 8 too!

That's SOP with PSP. In version X it's better in that it doesn't
actually start another instance, but it still goes thru the splash
screen etc. so it saves no time.
You can ask about the current rev on cnews.corel.com newsgroups. I
forget the latest rev, but it might have gone further with that
situation; can't hurt to check.

I've the same problem. Have used PSP 8.10 on the same machine running XP now
for some time. Always opened just one instance of PSP by double clicking a
jpg (for instance) direct from a folder.

Recently I had to reload the machine (new hard drive needed) and reinstated
the same version of PSP but now every jpg (or other graphic file) opened from
a folder opens another instance of PSP.

Drag & drop a file onto the edit area of PSP works OK, so does File - Open
etc. in PSP. I've also tried the PSP browse function and that is OK it seems
to be just the occasion when double clicking a file either in a folder or an
email attachment causes multiple instances of PSP.

I have recently loaded PSP on another XP machine and that does NOT open
multiple instances.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Rod.

I'm talking about PSP Pro 10.3 here, so ymmv:
Are they actually separate instances, or does it just look that way
because the splash screen et al go by? Look in the Windows menu and see
if all the jpg's are listed there. If so, it's actually the same
instance; just looks separate. I know 9 was that way; never had version
8. It is confusing at first.

I can't speak for Rod, but here they are definitely multiple
instances. PITA...

Huh; my first version was verion 7: Guess I just never encountered that
situation somehow; if 8 had it, then 7 did, pretty surely.
I wonder if there is an option to to allow or not, multiple instances
in PSP? I was just looking in version X but I don't see anything like
it.

Using version X: I know I CAN run multiple instances of PSP on
purpose; I just did it.
I only have file associations for .psp and .pspimage filetypes so
clicking anything else doesn't start PSP Pro for me. But clicking on
..PSP or .PSPimage files doesn't start a new instance of PSP. Neither
does using the Context Menu using Open With for .jpegs & .bmps. So
apparently it's been straightened out at least in version ten (X).

Their forums are populated with really knowledgeable people if you/Rod
want to ask there. I know you'd get a correct answer from them; really
great people there though I haven't posted ina long time. They will
know for sure and even have separate groups for different versions.
They're at cnews.corel.com if you want to look with a newsreader.
That's really a much more on-topic place to post this, anyway.

HTH,

Twayne
