multiple instances of explorer load at boot

While looking for reasons for a sudden bout of poor
performance, I discovered in task manager that Windows was
loading multiple copies of explorer. The process list
shows 6-8 extra copies of explorer loading at the end of
the list.

I can stop the extra processes, but can't figure out why
they are loading.

I'm running an Asus P2B-DS with 1 - 850Mhz processor, 1GB
Ram, Windows 2000 SP4, and Norton AV and Firewall.

I though Norton might be causing it because it started
recently after a live update, but uninstalling Norton did
not fix the problem.

Any Ideas?

You have multiple instances of explorer.exe running after boot? Nothing else on the desktop? And you can shut down some of them without causing a loss in the dektop, the shell? Hmm... I would make sure you have only ONE explorer.exe and it is in %systemroot% on the system.

Do a search...
for "explorer"(no quotes"
should be like C:\winnt\explorer.exe
You'll have a couple of others in service packs(dont worry about them)

Sure sounds like a bug
W32.Blast.Worm or Welchia are two of the latest
Do a Google for each and follow the iderctions closely, if you have one

Fre virus scan online at www.antivirus.com
They have a good AVP also.
And , get a firewall, if you dont have one
