Since yesterday, slowly over time I end up with mulitple
copies of Iexplore running according the close program
box, which eats up my memory and resources until
eventually the computer locks up. I have latest McAfee
virus protection and a firewall and I have run AdAware
more than once. No popups or other windows usually appear
but in the close program box I eventually see 20 or 30
Iexplore(s). I have tried everything that I can think
of. Any suggestions would sure be appreciated.

Trojan or parasites.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

and:

SpyBot-S&D
http://security.kolla.de/

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

More: This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

I'm having this exact problem with multiple iexplore.exe --
maybe close to 100 running at the same time. I've tried
all updted virus scans, adaware scan, spy sweeper,
cwshredder and the suggestion given here about disabling
3rd party browser extensions. I've also looked around the
hijackthis site but it's too advanced for me. The Gateway
Tech support people have tried to help but they appear to
be clueless on this. Their last suggestion has been to
reinstall my win2000 operating system. I dread the
thought of having to do that. Any other suggestions?

Go to: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware]

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Next, go to the below location:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

Sign in, go to the "Spyware and Hijackware Removal" section.
Press "New Topic", copy and paste hijackthis.log into your new message.
