Multiple Excel versions and file associations

Hi,

I've got Excel 5.0 and Excel 2000 on a box with Windows 2000 OS(we are
upgrading from Excel 5 to Excel 2000). I've disable Excel 5.0 by renaming the
Excel executable. Then I'm running "Excel.exe /regserver" to make Excel 2000
default. Everything seems to be fine untill here. However, I've notice that
when I open an excel spread sheet that was created using Excel 5.0, the file
associations for Excel have been changed.

I've re-run "Excel.exe /regserver" and opened the same excel spread sheet to
reproduce the problem, but this time file associations for Excel haven't been
touched. I've noticed that this is happening only first time when I open a
spread sheet that had been created using Excel 5.0. I can't figureout what is
triggering the change in Excel file associations.

Can any one has come across this sort of situation? Am I missing anything in
the process of making Excel 2000 default? Please let me know.

Running "Excel.exe /regserver" does not change the file associations. It
only rewrites COM entries so that a COM application using Excel will start
Excel 2000 instead of Excel 5.0. By the way, if you have installed Excel
2000

To change file associations, you need to go in Windows Explorer, Tools,
Options, File Types, and edit the association to .xls

Thanks for response. Sorry its my bad..I actualy mean file types
I have been using "ftype" command to check the file types.
Before running Excel.exe /regserver, "Excel.Sheet.8" was pointing to
"C:\Program Files\Office42\Excel.exe" which is Excel 5.0.
After running Excel.exe /regserver "Excel.Sheet.8" is pointing to
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" which is Excel 2000.

I've notice that When I've opened an Excel spread sheet that had been
created using Excel 5.0, files types have been changed and most of the Excel
file types are reverted back to "C:\Program Files\Office42\Excel.exe".

As I mentioned earlier, this is happening only once( first time).

Do you think I've missed any thing?
