Multiple e-mail accounts

I have two e-mail accounts set up in Outlook, and they work fine 89% of the
time. However, sometimes I will close account A and attempt to open Account
B and it will only let me access Account A. I have to completely reboot my
computer to get it operating correctly again.

Post a clear, detailed account of your problem. Yours makes no sense. Why
would it ever be necessary to close one email account in order to access
another? What is your Outlook version? What are your mail account types?
89%? Sure it's not 88%? If you need help creating posts, read this:

What do YOU mean by "close" and "open" an account? The only time
Outlook "opens" an account is when it connects to the mail server to
poll for new inbound e-mails or to send some; otherwise, the accounts
are "closed" (no connection).

What is the mail poll interval configured to? It should not be less
than 5 minutes, and 10 minutes, or longer, is recommended.

--- Posting Hints ---

ALWAYS REVIEW your message before submitting it. You want someone OTHER
than yourself to understand your post. Also remember that no one here
is looking over your shoulder to see at what you are pointing.

Often you get just one chance per potential respondent to elicit a reply
from them. If they skip your post because you gave them nothing to go
on (no details, no versions, no OS, no context) then they will usually
move on to the next post and never return to yours.

I regret that my post wasn't clear, but I'm obviously not an expert which is
why I needed help to begin with. And since you're so interested, I meant to
type 80% and I had a typo. But if anyone else is interested in trying to
help me, I will try to be more detailed.

I have Outlook 2003. I have two e-mail accounts which I have set up to
download to outlook. The first screen that pulls up when I enter outlook
gives me an option to choose which e-mail account I want to open. (For ease,
I will call them Account A and Account B). Most of the time, I select
Account A, open it, read my e-mail, and close it. When I close Account A,
Outlook usually returns to the first screen which gives me the option of
which account to open. THE PROBLEM IS: Sometimes I will exit Account A,
but when I pull up Outlook again, it doesn't give me the first screen to
choose Account A or Account B. It automatically goes to Account A. I cannot
get to the first Outlook screen again without rebooting my computer.

I appreciate any help anyone can give me. I've been using this program for
at least 5 years with no problem until this started in the last couple of
months.

I presume that what you are ACTUALLY talking about is Mail profiles, NOT
"email accounts". (FWIW you can have a number of email accounts set up in
one Mail Profile).
If you do Control Panel-Mail-Show Profiles how many Profiles are shown in
the box?

H

Yes, when I go to Control -Mail-Profiles it shows my 2 e-mail accounts. I
was referring to Profiles, not e-mail account. Sorry.

I suspect that Outlook is not closing properly. What version are you using?
Check via Task Manager that Outlook is well and truly closed (i.e. there is
no instance of Outlook.exe running) and see if the behaviour still exists.

H

Thanks so much for your patience. I have Outlook 2003. I checked Task
Manager, Applications, and it does not show Outlook as running. But when I
click on the Outlook Icon it takes me directly to Profile A inbox. No
option to open Profile B.

Won't necessarily show there. Check Task Manager-Processes.....

H

Ok, under processes it shows OUTLOOK.EXE , no CPU usage and 35,348k memory.
What does that mean?

It means that Outlook is still running in the background even though you
have closed the Outlook window. That's why it goes directly to the Profile
you last had open.
End the process and see if that cures the problem.
You then need to ascertain why Outlook is still running.
Do you have a PDA or mobile phone that you synch Outlook to attached to your
computer?

H

hondar

Fantastic! That fixed it. Thanks so much! But you're right....what's
causing it? I don't have anything synched to Outlook.

H

hondar

BTW. I reopened outlook after I closed it via task manager. Then I closed
it again, and it remained close. There doesn't seem to be any pattern of why
it sometimes won't close.

Have you set your anti virus to check email?

That doesn't normally have any affect on whether outlook.exe is still
running after closing the window...

You have been so helpful. I had three add-ins Avast, Google Search and
Exchange Extensions. I disabled Avast and Google Search, but didn't know
about Exchange extensions. Hopefully that will do it. Thanks again for your
patience. I really do appreciate it.

You should uninstall Avast and reinstall it without the mail scanning engine.
Unless you need Google Search to index your mail, it's probably a good idea to
uninstall that add-in as well.

Would that cause outlook.exe to still run in the background?

Likely not, but it goes a long way toward forestalling the other problems
scanning can create.
