i can edit a line for win98 so i can select 98 or xp.robin

Robin,

Which drive is 98 installed on, and which drive is XP installed on? If 98
was installed on the C: drive, it may be possible to resurrect that
installation, then repair the XP boot loader. If 98 is installed on C:,
then boot with a Win98 startup disk and at the A: prompt type SYS C: This
will make your 9x system bootable again. Then see my web site,
www.dougknox.com and go to Win XP Tips

For Win9x/Me: Install 98/Me after XP is Installed.

You're primarily interested in the section for Repairing the Windows XP Boot
Loader, to fix/create the dual boot setup.
