multi boot PC - one OS cannot start

I am having problems booting into one of my XP systems. It is an SP2 based
install but when I start up it gets as far as the 2 tone blue screen with
the Windows XP flag logo and nothing else, I dont get any writing and the
screen does not change.

I tried using LKG with the same results and booting into safe mode with /
without networking and although i can see the Safe Mode and the version in
the 4 corners it ends up at the same blue screen with the XP Logo.

Is there any way I can gain access to this system or is it a case of zapping
it and reinstalling?

If you run an XP "Upgrade"setup, from the original, or "Gold" version of the
setup CD, and you have SP2 installed, it will go into a setup loop, and you
will lose your install. Uninstall SP2, BEFORE you do a Upgrade setup from CD
(that lacks sp2 on it.)
