mspaint won't open

using Win xp, home ed., sp2
mspaint.exe is located in C:\I386 but will not open. I get an error
message: paint has encountered a problem and needs to close. Paint is not
listed in the programs directory under "add/remove programs" nor under
Accessories. I'd appreciate any suggestions for getting it working.

thanks...........jim

First, the files being located in the \I386 folder are not meant to be
executed. In fact, they are compressed (eg. MSPAINT.EX_) in most cases.
The executable file (MSPAINT.EXE) is located in the %windir%\System32
folder. Create a shortcut to that file if this shortcut is missing.

If the problem persists, this article may help no matter if the error
message differs from yours.

Addendum: If "MSPAINT.EXE" is missing in the %windir%\System32 folder,
reinstall Paint via Control Panel > Add/Remove Software > Add/Remove
Windows Components > Accessories and ... > Accessories.

You're certainly welcome. I was posting a follow-up message (addendum)
meanwhile, just ignore that message.
