MSPaint is driving me crazy

I have two users on my WinXP MCE2005 computer, both with admin rights.
Neither one of them can run MSPAINT.
It closes with encountered a problem, sorry for the inconvenience, send
report to microft style error message.

HOWEVER, if you log on to this box with remote desktop as either one of the
users, you can run MSPAINT just fine. (!)

I have installed ALL updates available via automatic updates.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled MSPAINT via add/remove programs from
the CD.

I have deleted the reg key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Applets\Paint (a few times)

I have opened MSPAINT (via remote desktop) and set the
image size to 10 x 10 pixels.

Nothing helps. It still crashes.

Since it runs when using remote desktop, I imagine the DLLs are OK, and
MSPAINT itself is not corrupted.

I give up... but I sure don't want to reinstall windows to get MSPAINT back.

Any ideas?

It's a Radeon 9800 Pro with ATI driver
wxp-mce-8-111-050222a-021277c
(ATI CATALYST 5.3, 03/08/05)

worth a try I guess, I'll let u know.

Try:
(1.) Boot to safe mode and see if it (MSPaint) works.
If yes - then driver should be OK, I'd look for other types
of interactions.
(2.) Normal mode, set Compatibility Mode to older Win2000, ME
and see if it will start/run.

Already tried the compatibility mode, that didn't help

I'll try safe mode next, thanks!

Booting into Safe Mode disables all but the basic video drivers. So if
booting into Safe Mode allows Paint to run then it *is* the video drivers.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Yes, Only Safe Mode VGA mode uses the 3rd Party driver in a low
resolution mode. Sorry for the misinformation.

.... still waiting for some recordings to end in 1/2 hour to try safe mode.

MSPaint may be driving me crazy, but I need to keep my wife happy too, LOL.

Thanks for all the helpful advise, I'll get back to you soon :)

Safe mode MSPAINT works OK.

Most bizzare, standard catalyst driver set incompatible with MSPaint !

My MCE box is bare software-wise, nothing but MCE, with standard drivers on
it, nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing else really installed on it, not
even games.

So, updating to the latest vid drivers now... wonder if MSPaint works with
ATI Cat 5.13? LOL.
I hope MCE likes them anyway, don't want to trade my rock solid stable PVR
for MSpaint :)

Why would anyone spend so much time and worry with a p.o.s. app like
MickeyMouse's Paint?

Maybe when some McDonalds Certified Food Specialist has a problem with
his Adobe Photo Shop he might remember this little thread and think to
change his video drivers, and maybe, even fix his little problem.

Why?
1)
It's MCE. I love MCE2005. However, installing ANY 3rd part software is
taking a chance on destabilizing it... not cool when it's your primary TV
viewing applicance. So I won't install Photoshop or Coreldraw on it.

Sometimes you need a screen snap, or crop a photo, or whatever. MSPaint
works fine for that.

2)
If a simple app like MSPaint doesn't work, there's a pretty good chance
something else is hooped too. Which you may find out next time you go to
import your latest photos off your camera while your inlaws are sitting
there. And it crashes. Ya know what I mean?
