MSN Messenger won't sign me in.....

I can't seem to get msn messenger to log me in but I can access my hotmail
account just fine. I don't want to download it again, takes too long, I'm
running the XP and anything you can tell me about checking firewalls or
settings will have to be a play by play action, I'm new to computers...email
