MSN Messenger 6/ Windows Messenger 4.7

Saman

Hi!! I am really frustrated with Windows Messenger which
does not let my MSN Messenger run in peace. I posted a
message earlier asking how to fix WM so that it doesn't
start automatically with Outlook Express. Mr. Jonathan
advised me about a line to copy and run in Start . . . Run

Well I did that. I have also uninstalled Windows
Messenger. Now it does not appear in the Add/ remove
programmes list, nor can its icon be found anywhere.

But WM 4.7 persists. When I connect to my University's
Virtual Private Network it signs in and I am signed out
of MSN Messenger. It does not open, however, as its icon
cannot be seen on the taskbar. I am just given a reminder
that MSN M has been signed out as I have been signed in
at another location. The only way I can actually open WM
is by typing windows messenger in Help and clicking the
link from there.

I have set its options not to open automatically. But it
remembers my sign-in name and password and signs me in
whenever it feels like it. I tried changing that to make
it remember my alternative sign in name, but when I
thought I had succeeded in tricking it to sign in to that
second account each time it wanted to open, I realised it
used the same options as MSN M. So when I started MSN M
it had remembered the second sign in, and when I reverted
it to remember my regular sign in name, the same happened
in WM.

I am totally tired of WM 4.7. How can I get rid of it
totally and forever so that I may use MSN M6?

Please advise. Thanks.

Take a look at Doug Knox's Website at this link for detailed instructions on
how to disable your Windows Messenger.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger_remove.htm

When you do this your Windows Messenger won't show up in your taskbar
anymore

However if you want to completely remove/uninstall Windows Messenger from
Windows XP can be found at this website made by Jonathan Kay.
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/problem.aspx?ID=7

Follow the steps and the pictures that the website has and you shouldn't
have anymore problems. Uninstalling Windows Messenger can disable some of
the messenger features such as Whiteboard Sharing, and others on MSN
Messenger if you're using that.

This won't be much help to you, Saman, but maybe it adds to the discussion:

On my parents' PC, "MSN Messenger 6.0" developed that problem of getting
"signed out", by (apparently) Messenger 4.7. It's baffling to me why 4.7
would even be running -- with no icon, and not being listed in the Task
Manager.
My own PC is very similar to my parents', and both versions coexist fine,
just like theirs did. I've tried to configure my system to duplicate the
problem, but cannot. I must manually run Windows Messenger 4.7 to get MSN
Messenger 6.0 to sign out.
Therefore it's not the two Messengers that are at fault -- they can get
along together just fine. Something else is interacting with them. But
what is it?
