msinfo32.exe

Wesley Vogel

Hello;
I have Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 (build 2600).
Version: 5.1.2600
Service Pack: 1.0
Location: C:\WINDOWS
PID: 55285-015-0055803-21325
Hot Fix: Q819696
I have all the significant Windows updates.
Now for my problem. If I go to: Start/Run/msinfo32.exe/Help and Support
Center opens. Under Pick a task/click Tools/Click Advanced System
Information/click View detailed system information/Help and Support Center
opens again. If I click View running services that works. If I click View
the error log that works also. I have a stand alone machine, so View
information for another computer is N/A.
If I go to: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System
Information/Help and Support Center opens. Same run around.
All the options under My Computer Information seem to work correctly.
I had Sisoft Sandra installed. I thought there might be some sort of
conflict, so I uninstalled Sisoft Sandra. No difference, same runaround as
above.
Did a search for msinfo32.exe. Found two instances.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache and C:\Program Files\Common
Files\MicrosoftShared\MSInfo. Both showed as 5.1.2600.0
(XPClient.010817-1148)
If I double-click on either one of the msinfo32.exe's listed in Search,
Help and Support Center opens. Same runaround again.
I ran sfc /scannow. Tried to access
msinfo32.exe again. Same runaround.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Wes

Thank you for your reply. I tried several of the following suggestions.
<Hi!
<Go to Start/Run and type in: winmsd
For me this starts Help and Support Center.
<Verify your settings here: Start/Run/Regedit

<HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared <Tools\MSInfo
<Path value = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
<Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe

<HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
<Paths\msinfo32.exe

<Default value = C:\Program Files\Common <Files\Microsoft
<Shared\MSInfo\MSInfo32.exe
<Path value = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft <Shared\MSInfo
Both Registry entries verify OK.
<Fix for Help and Support and System Information
<http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/fixwinxphelp.htm
Ran the Doug Knox fix on the 2nd or 3rd day after I installed
Windows XP. That was about two months ago. That problem was that Help
wouldn't even open. I managed to delete some reg entries with EasyCleaner.

<Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: net stop winmgmt. <Then delete the
<System32\wbem\repository directory. Once done go <back to Start/Run/CMD and
<type in: net start winmgmt.
Did the above and rebooted, Repository was recreated.

<How to Use System Information (MSINFO32) <Switches
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-<US;q300887&
Went to the above link and CAN access System Information using
several of the Switches. If nothing else I can always access System Info
this way. Funny, though, that Start/Run/msinfo32 won't work, but
Start/Run/msinfo32 /showcategories (among other switches) does work.

<If none of the above helps, replace your Boot.ini.

My Boot.ini
[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /SOS
C:\ = "Microsoft Windows"

Did not try the following two suggestions because I have no
problem booting.

<System32 - Windows XP could not start because the <following file is
missing
<or corrupt:
<\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

<Suggestion: To fix the "windows\system32\config\system <file is
<missing or corrupt" where XP wont boot, go to
<recovery console and type:

<cd system32\config
<ren system system.old
<ren system.alt systemalt.old
<copy c:\windows\repair\system
<copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
<exit
<[Thanks Kelly/MVP]

<With regards,

<ssg/pronetworks.org

Again thank you for the suggestions.
Sincerely.
Wes

If none of the above helps, replace your Boot.ini.

System32 - Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing
or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Suggestion: To fix the "windows\system32\config\system file is
missing or corrupt" where XP wont boot, go to

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system

exit
