I use Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed. Athlon XP2000+ CPU, 512 Mb DDR
Ram, V333DA M/Board, 30Gb, 80Gb, 15Gb hard drives, DVD/CD RW, CDRW and CD
Rom. Recently found that M/C seems slow and then notice that MSIMN is
using 100% CPU. Deleting O/E makes no difference but deleting MSIMN with
task manager - end task solves the problem immediately and m/c speed is
back to normal. I have been unsuccessful in associating this occurrence
with any other activity. Has anybody any idea. My apologies if this has
been answered recently but I have been trouble free for so long, that I
have neglected to read the posts on this newsgroup for some time. DES

That file is Outlook Express. Please fix your configuration files and/or
email account(s), or just shut it off (i.e. kill it in task manager) and
don't use it. Use Mozilla Thunderbird.

Do you use McAfee?
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=226313

This link suggest that some type of malware is using MSIMN to hide it's
process?

Sometimes, when you remove malware it will stop your TCP/IP
stack from working (Internet connection).
Winsock or LSP-fix will correct the problem,Download first.
Note to anyone using NOD32 Anti-Virus software,Do Not delete the
"imon.dll" this fix reports,That is your e/mail scanning engine.

YES-You need more than 1 malware program,I use all of these.

To help stop unauthorized downloads via your activex controls change your

These settings are good for XP. The wording should be close for other systems
as well.
Go to control panel and open "internet options.
Click on the security tab then custom level.

Hi MAP,
Thanks for the suggestions. I do not use McAfee but use Avast. I have most of the other programs you suggested, SpyBot, AdAware SE plus, AdWatch, Spyware Blaster, Sygate, A2 etc.
I like your idea that some other program is using MSIMN to mask it's presence as certainly closing Outlook Express does not close MSIMN.
I am currently performing a deep scan of the whole machine and it will be interesting to see what it finds.
Thanks for the suggestions.

If you are closing Outlook Express but the msimn.exe process doesn't
unload then you probably configured OE to do compaction on exit or every
N days and that's what it is doing. Compaction can whack CPU usage up
to 100%.

Hi MAP,

Following your suggestions I ran a series of virus and Trojan scans on my machine and some of them found the dreaded ATPartners.dll tucked away in there. Although none of the scan programs could rectify the problem, once identified I was able to delete it.

So far (touch wood) the problem has not recurred, so hopefully you nailed it.
Thanks for your help.
