100% cpu in msimn

Occasionally I notice that cpu goes to 100% with almost all of it in a task
called msimn. I see a lot of postings here about problems with Outlook
Express and msimn, but none that describes excessive cpu usage. (I didn't
look at every one of them, so there may have been some that refer to that.) I
do use Outlook Express. I don't think it was running at the most recent time
this problem occurred. I may have just closed Outlook Express, but I'm not
sure.

Any idea what might be causing this and whether there is anything I can do
to fix it?

Thanks,

Phil

It can be caused by OE doing a file compaction. If this is the case then
doing an End Program on OE will probably result in message loss.

msimn.exe *is* Outlook Express.

OE did not show up in the task manager's list of Applications. What I meant
by "...not sure whether I had just closed Outlook Express" was that Outlook
Express was not running, and I may or may not have JUST closed it. That is to
say, OE may or may not have been in the process of closing when I observed
the problem.

Sounds like I'll need to collect more data, if this happens again, in order
for anyone to help me understand this better.

msimn with an exe extension is Outlook Express.

OE doesn't get listed as Outlook Express in Task Manager/Applications tab,
it gets listed by the window title. I.e. Local Folders, Inbox, Sent Items,
etc. whatever OE is open to.

Open Outlook Express and click on the Inbox.
Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
Click on the Applications tab.
Right click on Inbox and select Go To Process.

What gets highlighted? msimn.exe on the Processes tab?

Wesley,

you wrote: Hope this helps. Let us know.

I believe you when you state that OE does not get listed as OE in the task
manager. But no, it does not help. It still seems unacceptable for msimn to
be using up the entire cpu for more than a few seconds at a time.

It sounds to me like you're quibbling over terminology and that you object
to my referring to msimn and Outlook Express as two different things,
primarily because I state that Outlook Express was not running. It's unclear
to me how that leads me any closer to a solution.

If Outlook Express was not running and some process named msimn was running
and msimn is not Outlook Express, then you have some sort of malware. Since
you do not say what extension this msimn process is or was I am not going to
guess.

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan. Do the same for
whatever anti-spyware applications you have.

As Frank posted, OE could have been compacting folders.

[[Changes after installing Service Pack 2
The background compaction feature is removed from OE after you install
WindowsXP Service Pack 2. Instead of compacting in the background, which was
often the source of problems, OE now waits until you open and close the
program 100 times. After that 100th time OE begins to compact. Do NOT stop
this process! Do NOT turn off your computer or put it into Standby (Sleep)
mode! Do NOT use your computer until the process if complete! Doing any of
these things can cause the compaction process to fail and result in lost
messages]]

You did not respond to my post about OE compacting. This can cause
(virtually) 100% CPU usage.
