msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

When I try to install or uninstall programs I get this message. I have
updated Windows Installer to V 3.01.4000.1823. Is there anything else short
of reinstalling windows that I can do to fix this?

I am running Windows XP Home on a Compaq Laptop.

I don't remember updating it manually, but the same goes for me: Compaq
Laptop WinXP Pro Sp2, and sometimes instead of that generic problem it shows
that "Instruction at 0x................ tried to .................. Can't
read memory"

I had this problem for quite a while. Internet searches convinced me that it
is a pervasive problem for XP users. My suspicion (merely a suspicion) is
that microsoft has distributed Vista versions of Windows executables to XP
users. These executables are not fully compatible with XP.

Many advice givers treat this as a virus infection. I don't think this is
the case.

I managed to rid myself of this problem by using the Windows System File
Checker (SFC). There is ample doc on the MS website describing the use of
this utility. I used the /SCANNOW option.

SFC will prompt you for an XP distribution CD. Before running SFC, I'd
recommend creating a "slipstream" distribution CD that incorporates the
service pack updates. Use the slipstream CD for the SFC process. This
bootable CD would also be useful for emergency repair of your system.

Consult the MS website for instructions on creating a slipstream XP
distribution CD. Creating the CD will require installing the downloadable
utility (nLite) from the MS website. If you cannot install this utility on
your system, you may have to create the slipstream CD on a different computer.
