*.msi and *.msp failures

This computer uses Windows XP HOme. This problem first came about when I got
an update to a webmail program as a *.msp file. The file started the Windows
Insatller and went part way through the installation and quit with an
Internal Error 2352 showing in the dialog box. Various emails with their
support went nowhere as they wanted to know the name of the file after the
error code. Well, there was none; only the error code shown. This they
apparently couldn't understand. I just gave up as the email application was
working OK.

Next, I down loaded the VistaUpgradeAdvisor.msi and attempted to load it.
It too failed part way through showing Error Code 2352. I tried to install
WindowsDefender.msi and it failed part way through with Error Code 2352. A
check on MSDN shows that error code corresponds to Cabinet.dll not being
found. This computer has three Cabinet.dll files: one in C:\WINNT\System32,
one in C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386; and, one in C:\I386.

Where is Cabinet.dll supposed to be? Aren't these enough? I have installed
*.msi and *.msp files before without all this grief! Could there have been a
Microsoft Updgrade or Update that caused something to change?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a must dll and is in the right place as per the info you have given us.
Try reregistering the dll and see what you get. Go>start>run and type in
regsvr32 cabinet.dll
Be sure you leave the space after regsvr32 and before cabinet.dll and then
click OK.
Now you should get a window that tells you that the file was loaded but the
entry point could not be found. Now give your installs a try. Post back with
your results. TTFN.

I tried to register the dll as instructed below, but received an error dialog
that stated, '"Cabinet.dll is not an executable file and no registration
helper is registered for this file type.'

I tried to install VistaUpgradeAdvisor.msi anyway and received the same
error dialog as noted in my initial post.

Will await further instruction.
