I crashed yesterday and haven't been able to get into XP. I tracked down a CD (mine came installed) and got to the recovery console but when I type in the "md tmp" command I get:
"access denied."

Does anyone know a workaround for this?

thanks so much,
Terry

Assuming you have an actual XP CD as opposed to a recovery CD, try a Repair
install as follows:
NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data files intact, if
something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be forced to start
over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your data backed up,
you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

This is what I get:

(1) to set up setup Windows XP now, press ENTER

or (2) Repair Windows Installation using the Recovery console.

or (3) to quit...

I don't get the R option. I get:

1) set up WINXP on the selected item press ENTER (selected item is C: Partion1 (Unknown)
2) to creat a partition in the unpartioned space, press C
3) to delete the selected partion, press D.

When I picked Enter, I get this message, "The partition is either too full, damaged, not formatted, or formatted with an incompatible file system. To continue installing Windows, Setup must format this partition...will delete any files on the partition.

Does this sound familiar to anyone??

thanks!

Yes, it generally means the partition is too corrupted for a repair install
which means you need to start over with a clean install which will wipe the
system drive, requiring you to delete the C partition, create a new one and
reinstall XP.

Did I mention this happened as a result of uninstalling IE6? I guess it was a big mistake of which I was unaware. Everything was going fine, up to the ".....in order to complete......restart" - yes, I am now in a perpetual restart mode, about to lose 14G of programs and data and no, stupid me, no back ups. I was just formtting CDs this week to begin moving data over and had just copied 1 program over. C'est la vie....

I guess I'll go back to the 11/01 version of my laptop. That should be interesting.

thanks for you input and assistance. t
