MSCONFIG - Startup Odd Characters

Hello,

When I look at the MSconfig utility I go over to the start up tab and see my
normal programs with the exception of a couple odd ones. They are checked
as HCKU but have squares and odd characters. So I unchecked the 2
questionable start-ups and get errors when I boot referring to the 2 start
up processes but that's it everything seems ok. I'm just wondering if
anyone has seen this before.

Thanks!!

When you open MSCONFIG and go to the start-up tab you have a list of
programs that starts up with windows. I have 2 programs that are listed at
the bottom they really don't have names - they are just 2 rows of square
symbols (1 row for each start up program) - kind of like when you open a
document that should have text, but instead of letters, that text is a bunch
of squares.

I would lave to look up the porperties when I get home. It's just odd.
Hope this helps. Thanks for looking!

hmm, sounds like you did ok. I had an entry like that one too a while back.

hcku is an acronym for the section in the registry. what you could do is to
enable them (temporarily) , they will start at the next boot up. if they are
actively enabled these startups will either appear as icons in your task bar,
listed in your task manager either in applications or as a process.

What you can do is to find some freeware that is designed to analyze the
processes and elaborate as to who or what they are. ProcessLibrary.com
Quick Access is a program. Here is another which provides more details and
it is called task info from http://www.iarsn.com/ there are others, so
you can look around. Programs like system mechanic6 (or 5) can describe the
startups and give you the option to disable or delete them. Version 6
actually removes automatically.

If you dno't need those mysterious entries, you will have to clean up your
registry to remove the mysterious hkcu's
