msconfig mistake

hi all, hope you are all well.

Ran msconfig and meant to remove all checked boxes from start up to see why
it was taking so long to start up, but unchecked the system boxes in the
panel next to it.

Now the laptop starts really quick(think because it's only running the
basics) but ive lost a lot of fuctions, such as unable to look up help and
support, unable to load new virus updates, no devices in device manager list,
they all say unable to because updater not started.
also no sound and no device installed. Cant figure out how to get previous
settings back as restore has no previous dates to go back to

Did you try to run msconfig again and put the X's back?

Yep, on start up the boxes were checked but some were missing.

If it means anything, the start bar at the bottom of the screen has went
from green start/blue bar to all grey, similar to safe mode.

also, just to add further frustration, the laptop does not recognise anything
in the USB ports.

When you are in the Services tab, you need to uncheck "Hide All
Microsoft Services" and click Enable All. (And make sure you also click
on Enable All while you are in the Startup tab!) And then reboot your
PC. Your MS services like Help and Support should come back. Same with
your AV program's features.

help and support
is a service that
can be enabled
or disabled.

i understand this, but the option is not there to toggle it back on.

Plan A:

You know it doesn't work right if they are all disabled, so I would
think twice about just enabling them all for the heck of it, but that
may be okay even if you can't get the button to work (yet). They are
in MSCONFIG for some reason.

Your taskbar is probably grey because that is part of a Windows Theme
and I'll bet your Theme service is not running either. That one is
for sure in MSCONFIG.

What you can do in MSCONFIG, is enable them all by checking each box.
This will not change their startup settings in the services applet, so
they may not be set to automatically start when you reboot. That is
fine. Enabled and Automatic starting are not the same thing. You can
worry about turning them off later.

Maybe you an only do a few at a time until they are all checked again.

Just check each box by hand, then reboot. The ones that need to start
hopefully will.

If Plan A fails, try Plan B:

Here is a link that will show you the XP default services settings by
Service Pack:

http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/defserv.htm

If you can't enable them one by one in MSCONFIG, go to Start, Run,
services.msc <enter> There are more services in XP than you will see
in MSCONFIG.

Do not just enable them all in services.msc either. Use the list if
MSCONFIG doesn't do it. Mark them off on the list as you go. You may
or may not need or have them all.

Plan A is your best bet. If it doesn't work, let us know what didn't
work before trying Plan B.

ok, well that is
the problem you
have with help
and support.

are you logged
in as an administrator
or as a user?

also, do you have
anti virals installed
as well?

if so, they can inhibit
access to the services
and limit other windows
functions if the av is
not properly configured.

thank you very much,

had to use Plan B as none of the missing boxes were avail on the plan A
route of MSCONFIG. Not sure if when i unchecked them, they disapeared as
unused. Any how, checked most of them and all looks ok, only problem is what
is needing checked and what isn't, but i guess that is just trial and error.

Good.

So now in MSCONFIG on the Services tab, do you have check boxes again
and can toggle back and forth?

Is your enable all/disable all now working? You can enable/disable
all but then click cancel with no foul.

Choose to hide all Microsoft services. What's left is stuff that got
installed after XP (network, sound, printer, AV, etc.). If you don't
recognize them (Unknown doesn't necessarily mean a problem) and have
no idea and Google doesn't tell you what it is, turn them off - maybe
not all at once and keep a note. and see what happens on a reboot.

While you were working Plan A, were the check boxes just not there, or
were the check boxes there but you could not tick them to turn the
things on? If the boxes were there and you just could not check them,
I want to figure out why.
