msconfig improvement

I’ve been using msconfig (system configuration utility) to change the startup
of my system. I have changed the starup Selection to “Selective Startup†and
set it up as follows:

Process SYSTEM.INI file – Unchecked
Process WIN.INI file – Unchecked
Load System services – Checked
Load Starup Items – Unchecked (or a few items in startup tab selected)
Use Original Boot.INI

I’ve been told by Dell tech support that this method would work to improve
my computer performance. It has, quite nicely and I’m very happy with this
method. Maybe there is some opinion about this method…

Because I’d like to be sure I have the Virus protection (McAfee) working, I
should likely change this to load the files for McAfee, and thus in the
starup tab, I’ll have three startup items checked to load.

The problem is every time I run an application like Nokia Sync software or
many others, that application viciously puts a check box in its application
in the startup tab and I have to take it out after each session if I don’t
want it to load on startup.

Question:
1. Is the method I’m choosing a good method to get these apps to stop
loading so many system Items in the system tray do not load?
2. Is there a way to make the items not get check marks in them so they
will not load after running the applications.

Thanks

1. No. The System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) is meant to be used
as a troubleshooter not a startup manager.

2. Use the Notification icons for the programs themselves to stop a program
from starting when Windows boots.

[[System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe) allows you to temporarily
change the way Windows XP Professional starts by disabling startup programs
and services individually or several at a time.]]
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmb_tol_dxth.asp

[[System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe) automates the routine
troubleshooting steps that Microsoft Product Support Services technicians
use when diagnosing Windows configuration issues. You can use this tool to
modify the system configuration through a process of elimination with check
boxes, reducing the risk of typing errors.]]

From StartMan Help:
[[The correct method for removing any startup is to use the program that
placed it there in the first place. The reason for this is that the program
would otherwise be unaware of the changes you'd made with StartMan or any
other startup managers, and some will actually restore their startups
automatically, thus creating duplicates. Therefore always check the main
program's own options or preferences, or the system tray icon's options (if
the program has one) before resorting to any startup manager - including
this one. Startup managers should ONLY be used to disable startups
temporarily - such as when troubleshooting - or to remove non-essential
startups that have no removal options whatsoever. ]]

StartMan is a GOOD Utility, I use it all the time, especially after
installing software. Everything you install wants to run at startup.
StartMan shows where something starts from. Check out the Help in StartMan
also! You can either have StartMan disable startups or just use it to find
where something is loading from.

StartMan v1.3.96 Direct download

There are other start manager utilities but I don't use them, so can offer
no other advice.

The four most common places that programs start from are:

8) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
9) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
10) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
11) C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Thanks. I will use (and have already downloaded the suggested application).
What about not running SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI. How should I keep them from
running other than msconfig, Or why would I want to run these.

Process SYSTEM.INI file – Unchecked
Process file – Unchecked
Load System services – Checked

Michael,

What do you have in SYSTEM.INI & WIN.INI that you do not want them being
accessed?

[[Both the systemroot\System.ini and
systemroot\Win.ini files are not required by Windows XP and
these files are maintained only for compatibility with older software that
does not use the registry to save settings. The System.ini file is used to
start and store information for drivers and services; the Win.ini file plays
a similar role for applications.]]

[[The windows registry has taken over the primary functions of win.ini and
system.ini. These are just left for backwards compatibility. These files are
still loaded and processed but there is much less data in them since post
windows 3.1.]]

You can use some advanced startup manager for this purpose.
InControl Startup Manager has a black-list feature which will do
exactly what you want. Once you add the app you don't want to it
InControl will keep it out of the startup list.
You can find this startup manager here: http://www.get-in-control.com
