MSCONFIG: how to sort it out?

J

jav

I'm running XP Professional on a Pentium 4 with 512 Meg RAM. Booting the
computer
takes forever (well, several minutes actually....).

I've run Ad-Aware, SpyBot, WinCleaner and the Microsoft Anti-Spyware
programs
to clean up as much junk as I can. It still boots VERY slowly

When I run MSCONFIG, there are several tabs (SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, BOOT.INI,
Services, Startup) with a slew of subentries.

I'd like to minimize the files/programs loading on starting without
crippling my system.
Is there a program for a non-expert to sort out the wheat from the chaff?

StartMan is a GOOD Utility, I use it all the time, especially after
installing software. Everything you install wants to run at startup.
StartMan shows where something starts from. Check out the Help in StartMan
also! You can either have StartMan disable startups or just use it to find
where something is loading from. Best thing is, it only runs when you start
it. StartMan does not run in the background.

[[StartMan is an extended 'msconfig' Startup Manager, designed to take
control of all those pesky programs and background services that load and
run at logon - most of which you probably don't need. As well as providing
the usual trouble-shooting options to enable or disable startups, StartMan
also permits the removal of startups.
Duplicate Detection and Removal, a unique feature of StartMan, can be
configured to remove all duplicates automatically, with or without
prompting.
Orphan Detection and Removal. As above, for orphaned startups.
Executable Detection and Removal. As above, for executables.
Includes a full range of sorting options to make it easier to locate a
specific startup - by name, by filename - even by command line parameter!]]

Bob,

The download is a self-extracting EXE file.

Delete the one you downloaded and try downloading it again. I have no idea
why but this sometimes happens with downloads. Maybe part of the download
is stuck over Siberia in cyberspace. :)

The should be 1.35 MB (1,423,382 bytes).

Tried the download twice yesterday and once this AM with the same result.
Downloads a file, but will not open. File is only 804kb. I did see a note
somewhere else that startman is no longer active.

I did download "starter" which looks like a good program but does not give
me any option to solve my problem. If I disable in "all users" it also
disables in "current user".

Bob,

FWIW, I just downloaded startman10396.exe twice. Both 1.35 MB (1,423,382
bytes).

You might want to have a look at this...
