msc.exe bogging down my machine, what is it?

I've got a process named msc.exe running on my XP machine with memory usage
of over 150,000 K, and my machine is running extremely slow. For example, it
takes over a minute to open an empty browser window. If I end the process,
it just starts again. Does anyone know what msc.exe is, and if it is not
necessary, how I can get rid of it?

If it is a scanner application and you don't want it to run automatically
check your 'Startup Folder' and see if it is there: if so delete the entry.

Otherwise inspect under Services: you might need to be logged on as an
administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to perform
some tasks.

To open Services, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click
Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.

You can change this a msc.exe to a service that starts manually.

Tried these things.
- There's nothing in any of the Startup folders.
- I don't see this program under Services. Everything in Services can be
traced to another process.

Any other ideas? The performance problem has made this computer unusable.
Thanks

Start..run..msconfig..startup tab. If there is an entry there try
unchecking it.
