svchost.exe memory usage, system slowdown

R

Ron P

Running xp home with IE7, avg free av and few other start ups, my computer
is frustratingly slow and fail to respond with IE7 open and trying to do
other things. After about 30 seconds or more, all the clicks I tried to do
all of a sudden execute. When bogged down, I open task mananager and I see
several svchost processes running. I know several are normal, but sorting
my usage, I have one svchost process running memory usage hovering between
90,000 and 110,00. If I end that particular process, my computer seems to
run normally. How do I determine what is driving that particular process?
thx

Download Process Explorer.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the svchost
producing the high CPU usage, right click,
select Properties, Services. Note there are the full names and
some explanation of what each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services are
dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies tab allow
it a little time to display the information.

IE7. Select Tools, Manage, Add Ons, Enable or Disable Add Ons. What
do you have listed.

Thanks. Seems to be automatic updates, can this be right? Hmm.. Disabled,
seems to run better so far.

What's the error code?

Have you looked in the WindowsUpdate.log
located in your Windows folder?
