XP stopped booting even to Safe Mode.I had to use Recovery Console to fix a
corrupted hard drive. Using CHKDSK c: /r left me with over 7Gb on a 30Gb
drive unusable. When XP started up, MSBLAST.EXE was running. This has been
iradicated using a MS hotfix. Did the virus cause XP to stop booting? And
would formating the drive correct the corruption?

Lindsay, I would delete and recreate a new partition and format.

The hotfix that you mentioned closes the pathway that
the Blaster virus uses to install on computers "IT DOES
NOT" remove the virus once it is already installed! The
fact that MSBLAST.EXE is still running on your computer
should have been evidence of this.
