I am running windows vista basic on the latest sp and all updates are
current, generally using firefox but also use IE and occasionally safari on a
DELL inspiron 1545. When I come to shut down i keep getting an error message
about MSASCUI.exe and it is really annoying as I cant just click and go I
have to hang around waiting for the error message before I can walk away from
the system which takes seconds to a couple of minutes. Any suggestions, work
arounds or help?

SFC /scannow is the recommended method to repair Windows Defender on Vista
or Windows 7.

(that needs to be done at an elevated command prompt--I.e. start,
accessories, command prompt--right click command prompt and choose run as
administrator)

However, I'm not sure you need to go to that much trouble. I'd try going
into options and scrolling all the way to the bottom and turning off Windows
Defender, restarting, and then re-enabling it.
