MSAS restarts computer and prevents operation

This is something that is much more than a trivial error
for me. Details:

-Running Windows XP on a 1.2ghz Athlon.

-Ran MSAS, it found several spyware pieces
-Allowed it to remove them, but noticed it 'reporting'
several files that looked a lot like system files.
'stsvc.dll', I think.
-It asked for me to reboot my computer, so I did.
-After it shuts down, screen goes blank. Turning screen
off, then back on shows a 'no signal' message.
-Computer does not respond to anything. The 'on' light
and...'doing things' lights were on at all times, and the
two cd tray lights flickered on and off. If I opened a cd
tray, it closed a few seconds later. I thought for a bit
that it could be having problems with a cd was in there, so
I took it out (almost snapping the cd in the process). It
still stayed the same, and the 'restart' and 'on/off' key
didn't respond (on/off key normally just attempts to shut
down the computer, when working, and so I didn't expect it
to do much.)
-I turned the computer off at the wall, after leaving it
for about 10 minutes to try and start. Left it turned off
for about a minute, then turned it back on and pressed the
on button. Computer failed to start, but I left it running
20+ minutes. At one point, I tried keeping open the cd
trays through button-pressing, but this didn't help matters.
-Spent some time finding this site, and then turned off the
computer again. I just checked it a while ago, after about
5+ minutes downtime. It still hasn't started working.

-Anyone have any ideas? I was talking to someone on a
messenging service when I rebooted, and aside from the
rudeness they might feel I have directed towards them, I
also have no ability to access many important documents.

(I'm typing this up from a siblings computer.)

Any help, fixes, etc?

- Have you tried to start Windows XP in Safe mode (F8 during startup and
than choose Safe mode). Does it start?

- Have you tried to boot with last known good configuration? Does it work?

- Have you tried to repair the Windows files booting from CD (first choose
install, than repair)?

Ah, I thought I'd made this clear, but I guess not. When I
say 'does not respond to anything', and 'screen blank', I
mean it. The lights are flashing, and it's making the old
humming noise, but the mouse power is inactive, the
keyboard is inactive, and I can't see startup, or even know
if it's going through it. It's as if the computer is on,
but startup isn't even...starting up. :|

Well - if it's not a hardware problem, you should at least see the POST
screen with BIOS info during the startup - not the blank/black screen.. If
you don't see this - start checking your hardware (try to connect another
monitor, another graphics adapter and so on..)

I don't see anything, as mentioned. Oh, and I recently
discovered, if I press the 'menu' button on my screen, it
goes blank. Press it again, and a blue bar comes up saying
'off mode'. No idea if that has any bearing on it. And
I'll try mixing and matching my hardware now, thanks.

Those messages are built into the monitor itself. You'd get them if it
wasn't even attached to your computer. It sounds like your video adapter
is shot.
