I started running XP Homne edition.
When I am logged on to the computer and running any
aplications like MS word, MS Excel and do not have the
browser opened, I get popups as if I had the browser
opened.

How do I turn this off so I have to popups when browser
is not active

Make sure you have a firewall enabled.
