Several of my files have been inadvertently converted to Word Works. How do
I get them out. I save to the 2003-2007 option but nothing returns.

Okay, let's start by establishing what software you are using to create the
documents. Is it the Works word processor, Word 2007, or some other version
of Word (such as Word 2002, which comes with many versions of Works Suite)?

How are you determining that the files have been converted? By the file
icon? This doesn't say anything about the actual file format, just which
program Windows will use to open it. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm for instructions on
how to reestablish Word's "claim" to its files in the Windows Registry.

The file is in Word 2007. When I clicked on it, it would only come up in
Word Works format. I have since saved it as Word 2007 on the drop down and
now it reappears as a Word document. I hope I have solved the problem, and
thank you for the attention.
What advantage is there to working a document in Word Works?

There is no such program as Word Works, so I can't see that there would be
any advantage.

Hi St. John,

MS Works word processor (http://microsoft.com/works) can open .doc (Word 97-2003) formatted files, but not Word 2007 (.docx) files.
The Works word processor (which had some of the features that became Word 2007 features, such as themes before Word did <g>) cannot
use all of Word's features, so saving in an MS Works format, if you're sending a file to someone who has the Works product would let
you see what items might be changed/lost that you were using in Word.

Works 9 opens docx here (Office 2007 and Office 2003 with compatibility pack
installed). I suspect it is the compatibility pack that provides the
required filter for Works to open docx. Features that Works cannot handle,
such as some header footers are not available. It will also save docx
format.

Whether you can install the compatibility pack if you don't have Office
installed I cannot say.

The Works spreadsheet will also open Excel 2007 files - again with some
limitations.
