MS Word and How to get it?

I am currently running MS WinXP Home Edition and I am interested in getting
MS Word. My 'Computer Science' class instructor recommends we use WORD to do
our assignments. Unfortunately, the only programs I currently have are
NotePad, WordPad and MS Works. I'm 40 and this is my first semester enrolled
in a college, and since I'm going for my A.S. with a degree in Computer
Science I really want to be as prepared as possible. Next week will be my 2nd
week in this class. Thank You. And I appreciate any time and/or effort
applied to helping me resolve my issue. Oh! I'm a single mom, so I can't
even afford to 'pay attention', :-) the cheaper the better.

The student version of MS Office is much cheaper than the retail one. Check
if you are elligible.

Dukiesma1001,

Until you get a hold of MS Office or Office XP (both include MS Word), you
can use Wordpad to make your documents. You will need to save your Wordpad
documents as a 'Rich Text Format (RTF) which in turn can be opened with any
MS Word application at school. RTF is a format also used in MS Word. Ask
your teacher if you can use the RTF format to save if you can't buy the MS
Office or Office XP anytime soon.

You can always download Open Office from www.openoffice.org
A full Office suite that is compatible with Word and free.
Ted

If you have Works Suite then you have Word. Works Suite is Works + Word with Work's WP hidden.

Jonah,

Now that you've given free plugs to all your favorites, it's time to go back
to sleep. Why don't you stay that way for a few years?

Alan

Start/All Programs.
Search closely under Microsoft and anything else to verify you do not have
Word.

Do you have "Works" or "Works Suite"?
Works Suite includes Word.

Otherwise check you college/university for academic versions of Office, far
cheaper than elsewhere

Otherwise this may be the best price:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/student.mspx
Available at Wal-Mart, Staples, Office Max and almost any other location
that sells software.

You apparently missed "class instructor recommends we use WORD".
It is not a good idea to so quickly dismiss what the instructor recommends
unless failure is a goal.

Also perhaps you should look at your own references.
10 years old is not nearly current enough to be of any value.
Other references ignored since your first lacks value.

Download Open Office. It's free, and will do all that you need
done. It will read Word document files, which might be a
requirement if your teacher is using Word. I wouldn't buy Word
just for a course, since it is quite expensive. You would either
need to get Microsoft Office, which has Word in it, or MS Works,
which has Word in it. Maybe a friend has an older edition of Word
that you could install?

Open Office will also allow you to save a text file as Word document
easily if you go to the File menu and Save As...

It's a big download so if you are on dialup (as I am) you might be
better to find a PC magazine that has it on a cover CD.

I agree with but you might want to discuss it with the course
instructor first. There are valid reasons he might not want you to use
anything other than Word.

1) Go to store/shop that sells computer software.

2) Purchase either Microsoft Word or a Microsoft Office suite (or the
Microsoft Works Suite) that contains it.

3) Return home.

4) Insert installation CD in PC's CD drive and follow the on-screen
prompts and instructions to install application and desired additional
features.

Open Office also saves as PDF, which is nice as Acrobat reader is free
and isnatlled on almost every PC in existance.

Or get a friend with broadband connection and a CD burner to make you
a copy.

The openoffice.org web site lists a bunch of dealers that will cens
you a CD for a few bucks. The cost will be about the same as one of
the magazines, and cheaper than some.

OO is great.

Ask. But if he (or the school) expects you to use commercial software
they better have a good reason, and be able to state it clearly. The
school store should also sell it at as low a price as they can. The
instructor and the school store might actually like to hear about OO,
and give CDs away at the beginning of class.

(As I understand it, OO does't work out of the box on modern MACs,
but Word is rare on that platform, too.)

There are a couple other Open Source word processors; Google for
AbiWord.

If the instructor says that part of the course it to learn how to use
MS word, then you're in a typing class, not a computer science course.

You muppet, she wants to know how to get it cheaply. Next time, try and
engage your brain before your sarcasm.

The best answers so far are:
a) Microsoft Works Suite contains Word - she may already have it
(unlikely, but possible)
b) a student license is probably the cheapest way to get a copy.
c) OpenOffice, or most other opensource office suites are free and can
save as word .doc files, or are otherwise compatible
d) Wordpad can save as a .rtf file, which Word can read perfectly well.

I would also add e) eBay.
For example: MS Office Suite 2004 for $30:

Few people realize that MS Office for the Mac is a best seller as far
as Mac software goes. Microsoft for years has been one of the larger
publishers of Mac software along with Adobe.

AbiWord is surprisingly good. I use it on my laptop. Latest version
is 2.23.
