MS software download - wouldn't validate

T

Terry Pinnell

I tried to download some free MS software just now from the MS
Download page. After clicking Continue, to validate, I had to then
download a program called GenuineCheck.exe. When I clicked this in my
download folder I got a message like 'Not supported for this older
browser...' or something along those lines. Yet I am using the very
latest version of Firefox.

FWIW, the download was renamed GenuineCheck(2).exe, because there was
already a file of the same name from September 2005. However, I note
that the older EXE was 402 KB, versus 499 KB for the latest.

I then used the 'Alternative validation' method successfully, but it's
worrying that I should have had to do any of this.

Firefox doesn't support the ActiveX controls used by Microsoft for
updates and validation.

It's been necessary for about a year now. The GenuineCheck download is a
paid, I agree.

I would expect Microsoft to require Internet Explorer to be used, after all
you can't expect MS to support third party software.

Why can't one expect this? Most Windoze users use mainly third party
software. If Windoze can't support third party software, why even bother
using Windoze?
