MS Picture & Fax viewer

A friend In AZ is new to computers and has a laptop with XP. When he
receives a .jpg attachment to an email JASC Print Shop Photo Album pops up
to open the .jpg file. It is a 30 day trial copy pre-installed on his
computer. He does not take digital pictures and has no need for editing of
photos and just wants to see the pictures that have been sent to him and
doesn't want to buy a program that he has no need for. Can MS Pic and Fax
viewer be setup to automatically appear and open these pictures for him, and
if so how is this done? If not, what is the simplest solution that I can
pass on to him? TIA, Dick

Easiest solution would probably be to uninstall the JASC software.
Once it is removed, the default action for .jpg files should revert to
the MS Picture & Fax viewer. Otherwise, just Right Click a .Jpg
file and from the context menu select Open With, Click Choose
Program (Select Picture & Fax Viewer) and then check the Always
use.... sub-option.

Right-click on any picture file, select "Properties".
Under the "General" tab select "Open with",
select "Change", select "Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer", place a check next to
"Always use the selected program to open
this kind of file", then click Apply.

Open My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - File Types - scroll to jpg and
change what it's opened with there. May as well do jpeg while you are
there. I would open them with IE rather than the pic and fax viewer. Then
if you haven't done so I would also recommend opening IE - Tools - Internet
Options - Advanced - uncheck Enable Automatic Image Resizing.

Go to Windows Explorer or My Computer, select/highlight an image file, RIGHT click on it,
LEFT click on OPEN WITH, LEFT click on CHOOSE PROGRAM. When the OPEN WITH window opens
select: Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Then click to put a checkmark in the box to the
left of: Always Use the Selected Program to Open This Kind of File. Then click on the OK
button at the bottom of the window. This process will have to be repeated for each of the
image format files that have been associated to open with another application (e.g. JPG,
BMP, GIF, etc.), which you now want to always open with the Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer.
