MS Outlook not always closing correctly

D

The outlook data file, by default outlook.pst is a hidden file, as is
scanpst.exe
The default location of scanpst.exe for OL2003 is C:\Program Files\Common
Files\System\MSMAPI\1033
microsoft.public.outlook is one group

I have an intermittent problem with MS Outlook. Sometimes when I close the
application all seems well, but when I open it again, it won't Send or
Receive. If I then close it again and go to Task Manager/Processes I find
that Outlook is still running - sometimes there are multiple occurences of
this. If I then terminate all those occurrences and then open Outlook
once
more it opens with a message that there was a problem on the previous
closedown and it needs to synchronise the folders. It does this and all
runs
normally once more - for a while, then the problem happens again.

I'm now running Windows Vista, but the problem also happened when I had
XP.
I have Office 2003 Standard Edition SP3.

I can live with the problem, but it is frustrating so I would prefer to
fix
it.

Any thoughts?

This bug has been documented and is well known. DO NOT close Outlook using
the X button at the right of the window.

ONLY close it using FILE...EXIT.

This has been around eons, and I read a response at a developers meeting
transcript that basically said it is too embeded in the core of the OS to
fix.

That means that the original developer is riding around the Caribean in a
catamaran right about now, he has been for ten years, and efforts to recruit
him back on the Office team have been unsuccessful. No one else who has
succeeded to his job can figure out the code, for all their Computer Science
Ph.D.s and youthful enthusiasm.

Probably correct. They sure have not fixed it!!! It got worse with 2007
and Vista.

Why? Because it is absolutely, positively, true?

It is demonstrable that the X abort in a window is interpreted completely
differently (leaving the Outlook.pst file open) than the Exit command.

you need to adjust your auto archiving options so that most of your old
emails will be archived and your inbox will grow far smaller...

Then do a forced archive.... to reduce the amout of emails you have.. you
could also do a manual cleanup of trash emails that you don’t need.

this is a known problem with outlook.. and stupid.. One would think that
they would have fixed such crap..

And this is one reason why the .pst file is corrupted if you stop the
program using the X button and then restart Outlook.

Well I guess the tech guy for a 32,000 computer seat semiconductor company
is wrong. It does happen here...maybe it is a software interaction, but
others confirm it. We have messages transmitted that state to only use the
File Exit to leave...and it has been that way since Office 2000 at least.

Used v2003 for years on both XP and Vista... never had the problem.

Am now using v2007 with Vista... still don't have the problem.
