I am looking for a solution to a peculiar problem with my DSL service
provider and Outlook.

My ISP DOES NOT support Outlook, so I feel like a renegade (I
suppose). It only supports Outlook Express -- nice program, terribly
limited.

I am able to send/receive in Outlook Express. I imported the settings
as provided by AT & T Worldnet from Outlook Express into Outlook when
I installed a fresh copy of MS Office XP, and yet I'm only able to
RECEIVE new messages from Worldnet. When sending messages, the below
pasted message appears with that little yellow exclamation mark on the
task bar:

Task 'ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net - Sending' reported error
(0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from
the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message,
contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Worldnet's help desk's response: "Sorry, sir, we don't support
Outlook."

Anyone else out there with a similar problem and solution?

Please advise.

Have you checked the "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)"
option on the Advanced tab for your account? As I recall, AT&T Worldnet
requires that you do so.

didn't use the small 'i'. For POP3 I used - postoffice.att.net and
for SMTP I used mailhost.att.net And guess what? I now use Walmart's
ISP, and theya re not compatible with Outlook. SoI signed on for
Hotmail, but I have no idea how to set it up. I'm ready to give up
Outlook any second now. Most people I've talked to just don't bother
with Outlook's Email ...much too many hassles.

Good luck to you!

In actuality, setting up Outlook is rarely more difficult that setting up
any other Email client. To connect to Hotmail, just add an "HTTP" account,
supply your Hotmail credentials, and you should be good-to-go. At least,
that's the way it worked for me.

As for Outlook not being compatible with Walmart's ISP, if Eudora or Outlook
Express or Netscape Messenger works with it, Outlook should too. POP is
POP, after all, unless Walmart doesn't do POP correctly.
